The estate tax of course is only relevant when you are dead, so why should you care? Of course it's very relevant to whoever stands to inherit your estate, but that's the real issue. But they are also very exercised about welfare, and people getting things they haven't "earned" or "deserve". What has someone inheriting an estate "earned" or "deserve", other than often being born to the right parents? The two circumstances are too close for comfort, so better to focus on the dead and call it a death tax rather than an inheritance tax.
