About my own state, there was the capital city, Baton Rouge, and Lafayette over to the west, which I knew a little, and two cities up nawth, Shreveport and Monroe, which I knew were there, but that's about it. My horizons have broadened a bit since then.</i><br /><br />As Justin Wilson used to say: "Way up north. 'Round Shreveport."<br /><br />My hometown was always aware of its relationship to the world (most of Texas is, in an inferiority complex sort of way). It was provincial (how could it not be), but I was surprised by the parochialism of other places, like St. Louis and even Chicago.<br /><br />Surprised; then I realized humankind hasn't changed all that much over time; it just likes to think it has. Probably the greatest gift of my seminary was seeing how little people differ between now and Koheleth's time. We have so much more information at our fingertips than any point in history, yet many people are stuck in the bubbles just as much as if they never set foot outside the Shire.<br /><br />But Burke's work is more than just that section. It's a nifty way to connect the dots of history in a way I never got in school. It's a conceit on his part, but I think it works.
