There's the reductionist argument ("invisible friend") and the comparison to superstition ("ghosts, ghouls, goblins, elves, pixies, or gods"), and the idea that all religious believers (which is still the bulk of humanity) are insane.

Making the speaker, of course, the only sane person; an argument that is nonsensical on its face.

Wounded? Or merely a child who refuses to grow up? I can't decide which it is for each individual, and more and more I default to the latter conclusion. I'm not right to do that, but I'm tired of reading the rantings of so many people so obviously afraid there's something hiding under the bed. They, too, find the world more complex than they can cope with, so they want to reduce it to something they can discard.

In the end, you're right: pray for them, if only so they won't make you as angry as they have made me. I will learn from your example, rather than theirs.Rmjhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06811456254443706479noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9479398.post-77291014303368616852015-01-08T03:14:41.159-06:002015-01-08T03:14:41.159-06:00And then there's this reaction (of no particul...And then there's this reaction (of no particular import, just striking):

NZArtist • 13 hours ago

Tell me again why I need to "respect religious beliefs".
*Anyone* who allows the belief in an imaginary friend to go unchallenged is contributing to this insanity. There are no gods! There are no ghosts, ghouls, goblins, elves, pixies, or gods. It's all just made-up shit. The moment you say "respect their beliefs" your empowering these madmen. You're giving credibility to the idea that imaginary friends can tell you how to act.
If someone has an invisible friend they are not mentally healthy. There is no good religion. There is no benign religion. It is your obligation to publicly challenge, ridicule, and shame anyone who professes to having an invisible friend. This insanity needs to be disempowered.
Fucking crazy motherfuckers. If you have an invisible friend you're as mad as a fish, undeserving of any respect at all.

http://joemygod.blogspot.com/2015/01/france-twelve-killed-by-terrorists-at.html#comment-1777073404

***************

I don't know what to say to this person, besides pray for him (obviously, w/o telling him so!). To me, his reaction looks entirely UNHINGED. I can't even imagine what loathesome fundamentalists (if he's a Kiwi, then probably Christianists?) wounded him so terribly. I can only pray...JCFhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14516376500318551838noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9479398.post-74603835418137020032015-01-07T21:47:01.411-06:002015-01-07T21:47:01.411-06:00Thanks for the heads up; now I've fixed that. Thanks for the heads up; now I've fixed that.Rmjhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06811456254443706479noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9479398.post-51763596263775366542015-01-07T20:11:40.616-06:002015-01-07T20:11:40.616-06:00your ntodd link leads right back here
