There's a truism that gets forgotten in the very framing of he gun debate, which is that societies which value weaponry and promote individual violence as the solution to everyday problems necessarily devalue human life to the point where it is nearly worthless, and as a consequence become dystopian hellholes. We don't have to look far in either history or geography to see examples of the horror of states awash in guns, where just doing something as innocuous as writing an article critical of the wrong person - be they a criminal, politician, or businessman - can get you and your family killed with barely a thought. States where children are in regular danger of being gunned down in crossfire on the way home from school and where armed religious factions routinely shoot up one another's places of worship, each thinking itself righteous and doing the work of God, each person thinking they are nothing but law-abiding citizens.

On a related note, in my view the paranoid gun-hypers lack the very ability to feel compassion and empathy which make us truly human. They haven't developed themselves spiritually and psychologically yet to the point where they can follow the example of the enlightened pagan, much less Christ, in having the requisite felt sense of solidarity necessary to relate to their fellow human beings in a constructive way, to see "the Other" as subjects, not objects.

As a result, we are witnessing a moment in the aftermath of these recent massacres where our humanity is being tested, and metaphorically, Pilate is offering us the choice to free either Christ or an AR-15...

...and this crowd is calling out "Bushmaster! Bushmaster!"Windhorsenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9479398.post-88644238909142583892013-01-23T15:17:59.552-06:002013-01-23T15:17:59.552-06:00Wow, nice catch on the LaPierre quote.
