What defines someone as being Christian: they belong to a Church? they profess belief that Jesus is the Messiah? they profess belief in the Trinity? they are baptized? They actually follow Jesus' injunctions as to what one must do to join him?

It's kind of foreign to me because Judaism is defined tribally. However, we can still have a long debate as to who belongs to the tribe: anyone with a Jewish mother? what about with a Jewish father? people converted according to Halacha developed in a specific context that doesn't apply anymore? anyone professing our creed and joining our people via the rite of 'baptism'? Of course, this debate was all academic until (1) anti-Semitism let up to the point where could convert to Judaism without fear for their lives and (2) the rebirth of the state of Israel made Jewish peoplehood into something more than just a theoretical construct but rather means that any Jew is a potential citizen of Israel who could affect the political balance in that country.

Thus the question of who is a Jew really begins to matter as soon as it becomes a question of power (because Jews are no longer powerless but rather we have our own country). I guess the question of who is a Christian becomes important for the same reason: because the power of definition is a great power indeed.alberichhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03852752646926946626noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9479398.post-64504069067779212322012-11-29T20:40:31.222-06:002012-11-29T20:40:31.222-06:00"Tax envy" That's gonna leave a mark..."Tax envy" That's gonna leave a mark.Rmjhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06811456254443706479noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9479398.post-73538898907899100682012-11-29T20:29:09.924-06:002012-11-29T20:29:09.924-06:00"Well, I'd like to reclaim "Christia..."Well, I'd like to reclaim "Christianity" from him, too. I managed to get half-way through before I put it down in disgust. First off, I didn't like the title. "Driven"? Smacked too much of someone else driving my purpose in life. Warren misused Scripture to such an extent that I was appalled, and I'm no Bible scholar. The point of view seemed smug, know-it-all, and sanctimonious. In short, I hated it, and I've never thought Warren worthy of my attention since. When Obama invited him to give the invocation at his inauguration, I was deeply disappointed.

Whether I pay attention to Warren, or not, he's still there in all his my kingdom-IS-of-this-world glory and remains a force and an embarrassment. Mohler and Land & Co. are at least consistent and up-front about what they really think. Warren wants to hide from it, so it won't ruin his book sales. He wants to be the public Christian who's not too Christian.

I grew up among people like Land and Mohler; I discard them. But Warren is unctuous.
