Holy Week 2019: Tenebrae
The conjectured "Passion Narrative" which predates Mark starts with the Garden of Gethsemane story. When "JCS" was released in 1970 it was criticized for portraying Jesus as "only" human, and not ending with the resurrection. But the earliest versions of Mark seem to have ended at the tomb, albeit an empty tomb, from which those disciples who found it ran away terrified. And if the Passion Narrative is a reliable guide to anything, it is that from the beginning, the primary interest of Christians was in the humanity of Jesus of Nazareth, and his anguish over what was coming in his last days.
