Because the law won't let her do what Trump wants her to do.Nielsen resignation letter:— Shimon Prokupecz (@ShimonPro) April 7, 2019
“I hope that the next Secretary will have the support of Congress and the courts in fixing the laws which have impeded our ability to fully secure America’s borders and which have contributed to discord in our nation’s discourse.”
Because he really, really want a to do what he wants to do:Trump became increasingly angry believing Nielsen wasn’t doing enough to control the border & demanded she do more, including things that were not legal or even possible like blocking migrants from claiming asylum. @maggieNYT on her ouster https://t.co/3lNGzTJ9zj— Julie Davis (@juliehdavis) April 7, 2019
This isn't going to get better anytime soon. Especially when you consider our Constitutional and legal system depend on it being upheld, not just enforced. As @AJosephOConnell noted, it isn’t at all clear that @realDonaldTrump has the power to use the Federal Vacancies Reform Act to name an Acting DHS Secretary.— Steve Vladeck (@steve_vladeck) April 7, 2019
Instead, 6 U.S.C. § 113(g) suggests it should be Claire Grady, the Undersecretary for Management (and Acting Deputy). https://t.co/0Tvs1zdV68
I'm wondering if, as he and McConnell are clearly hoping, that the Republicans on the courts will let Trump get away with high crimes - crimes there is no chance the Senate will hold him accountable for - the judges will end up losing power. The whole system doesn't work when it is fueled on broadcast lies that install people without any sense of morality or honor or even civic obligation into those offices. The extent to which it boils down to questions of individuals feeling an effectively strong sense of moral obligation puts the de-religionizing of America into a seriously new light. And a lot of that de-religionizing is within the churches, the Catholic integralists, the "evangelicals" the prosperity cults, hardly count as examples of Christian morality.
