...when Jesse Helms and Strom Thurmond and George Wallace were public political figures (as well as Bull Conner and Orval Faubus), and I never saw them burst into flames or get tarred and feathered and ridden out of office on a rail.
Despite our most fervent wishes (and deep historical amnesia), life just doesn't work that way.
