To read Bill Barr's speeches is to see conservative arguments once made with some complexity made crudely; and to see conservative arguments that once usefully challenged progressive legal orthodoxy now used to uphold an increasingly authoritarian variant of conservatism.

I never agreed with Bill Kristol (or thought much of his arguments), but politics makes strange bedfellows, and I find myself sympathetic to him here. When Trump finally disappears Mr. Kristol and I will part company, but for now Trump is making us almost fellow travelers.

Maybe Americans will be unified after all! And over politics! Well, after all, the enemy of my enemy is my friend. And maybe we can all learn a lesson about extremes and rigidity.
