There's a John Updike story about a young grocery store clerk who witnesses his manager shame a young girl who enters the store in a swimsuit.  The clerk does the gallant thing and quits his job, but when he gets outside, the damsel in distress, ignorant of his actions, has left.

The clerk should have threatened to file a class-action suit because the young girl had a Constitutional right to wear a swimsuit in the grocery store.  Or something.

Wonder if this guy ever tries to enter the store barefoot and shirtless.....
