Thought Gibbon made it clear that 'trial by combat' was rooted in 'Jerusalem Law' which prevailed there while the crusaders occupied that city. My impression is that that's where medieval jousts became a thing. It's what Heath Ledger was all about in the Knight's Tale in Chaucer's time, three centuries later.
