NPR Was Just Reporting On the Sparse Presence of Capitol Police Earlier Today

Of course, Speaker Pelosi called for the National Guard, and the DOD reminded her she was not in the chain of command. "I like to watch." Trump as Chance the gardener. Augean stables, and us without a Hercules. In case you think that's overstated: Like I said, whole lotta cleansing to go on.... Well, how many protestors were black? 13? Do we have a President for the next two weeks? If the 25th Amendment is implemented, just shred it. There's no reason to have it taking up space in the Constitution. I understand there is at this moment a "room to room, closet to closet" search of the Capitol so the Congress can return to do its business. All it will take is the Senators to refuse to join any further objections. I'm not going to hold my breath, though. Really; we have to put up with this for two more weeks?
Trump’s term ends on January 20 unless he is removed from office earlier. It can happen either through invocation of the 25th amendment, done by VP Pence and a majority of the cabinet, on grounds that Trump has shown his unable or unwilling to fulfill his duties as President, or through impeachment and removal from office.

It is not just liberals making this call. Business leaders and some Republicans and leading conservatives have said that today has crossed the line. Trump needs to be removed from office and it needs to happen immediately. If impeached, he should be disqualified from ever holding office again. (He can even be impeached and disqualified after leaving office.)

Removal is very unlikely to happen given the hold that Trump continues to hold over the Republican Party base, but there’s no question that it should.

It will take years to undo the damage to American democracy coming from what we have seen during this presidency culminating in today’s dangerous actions. That is Step 3 and we will have to think hard about how to make it happen.

American democracy remains in peril. We need all hands on deck to restore it.

I've been saying that we, the people, will survive even Trump's presidency.  I think now it's going to take extraordinary action, now and after January 20 (impeachment and removal now, removal under the 25th, even impeachment after the 20th to prevent him from ever running for the office again; and criminal investigation and prosecution) to ensure that survival.  And the beginning of that process would be at least Senators refusing to entertain any further objections to the EC votes and acknowledgment that Joe Biden has been elected the next POTUS.

NPR is reporting that the Capitol has been cleared.  This situation can still be redeemed.
