Backing Away Slowly

"I'm just saying, it was a bad night for liberal hypocrisy," Maher argued. "They looked bad."

"Because, here's the thing, whether they like it or not — it's not fair. But they kind of are a representation to a lot of America of the Democratic Party," Maher.

Maher described Democrats as "the toxic D."

"Why is the D so toxic? Because they look at the Oscars and it represents sort of like pandering, it represents sort of like — we aren't connected to everyday people. Every year, the winners, I mean, this year it was disability, gay, and race. Which, there should be movies made about these topics, they're important topics, but it looks like the Oscars only do those topics," Maher said.

The Oscars have always only done "topics."  Epics, weepy dramas, films with the "right" message (usually a soapy one, never a challenging one).  The expansion of "Best Picture" nominees didn't increase the range of possible winners; it just padded out the usual suspects.  Predicting "Best Picture" isn't like arranging a winning bracket in March; it's more like shooting fish in a barrel.

And does anybody really pay attention to the "politics" of the Oscars?  Oh, I know the right-wing fringe does, the ones who say teachers are "grooming" children for pedophiles.  But the rest of us?  If Oscar had a political stance, it would alienate some portion of the paying moviegoing audience.  Never gonna happen.

And who the hell associates the Oscars with the Democrats?  Except Republicans who hate all things "cultural" because the "culture wars" are actually a war on culture.

Maher thinks he's connected to "everyday people"?  Anybody who says they represent "everyday people" is to be avoided.  The truck drivers in Hagerstown insisted they represented "Everyday people."   People like this guy, I guess.

When somebody says they are "connected" to everyday people, back away slowly.

  1. I don't know if Will Smith is a liberal, I know Bill Maher is a dishonest douche bag and stereotyper.

  2. Whenever Bill Maher speaks these days, I wonder if he just experienced a profound sense of fatigue, a feeling of emptiness following the physical act of love.
