Yup. One of the most bizarre meetings we ever had with Trump was in preparation for a hurricane landing. He was far less concerned with saving American lives and more concerned with his burning question: “Do they always spin counterclockwise?” It got weirder after that. https://t.co/N2k3kB9NTU

The man shouldn't be allowed anything sharper than a rubber ball.As the hurricane barreled toward the Carolinas he saw a guy in a MAGA hat on TV say he was going to ride it out. Trump liked that. He wanted to tell people to “ride it out.”Only a staffer warning that his voters might die (and were needed in 2020) convinced him to urge evacuation

Wait for it....Ok, anyway, then Trump wanted to take Marine One down to see the wreckage (hurricane hadn’t landed yet, evacuations hadn’t happened yet, but he was psyched to see some wreckage!). Had to be explained to him he couldn’t helo from DC to Carolinas. Too far & not enough room for team

Trump explains that the reason helicopters fail so often is that there are too many parts inside, ergo, too many ways for them to break. Helos need fewer parts, he reasons. The pointless discussion continues as federal agencies await presidential guidance on the hurricane.

It's almost a pity he didn't get his helo ride, complete with TV cameras to broadcast the moment. Those of us old enough remember how W's political career exploded underneath him as he flew over a flooded New Orleans after Katrina. W. tried to make up for it by standing in front of the darkened city to rally the country. Didn't really work.So what’s my point? I guess it’s that in a moment of national consequence — of life or death for many Americans — the president of the United States wasn’t just unhelpful. He was a complete idiot. And we should really try to avoid putting ourselves in that situation again.
