But the fact there seems to be only about 20 of them doesn’t seem very ominous. Yes, it is an ugly mob:An ugly protest today. A mob of self described “Christian Fascists” tried to force their way into a gay establishment in the gayborhood of Dallas holding a family event while chanting “Groomers” pic.twitter.com/2F9NE4rs0P

— Rossitron (@RossimusPrime) June 4, 2022But they seem outnumbered. This leads, predictably, to talk of the "threat" of "American theocracy." It is to laugh. Grow up in East Texas in the '60's and then tell me how scary "theocracy" is. The anger from people like Jerry Falwell, et al., was because they lost their theocracy, not because they sought to gain one. (Well, again, it was really racism, America's original sin, America's hidden wound. Falwell was outraged when Brown finally started being enforced in the South. It's all about racism; never lose sight of that, or you'll see spooks under the bed. But Brown still meant Jerry was losing his theocracy.)
Anyway, 20 people. I had more people than that in my tiny country church on Christmas Day when I told 'em I'd serve hot chocolate and cinnamon rolls during worship. This group is probably not much bigger than what Westboro Baptist was able to muster on command. Anybody remember them?
Yes, this is disgusting. No, this is not the end of life as we know it. This is summer, and it's already hot in Texas, and people are cranky because COVID moved their cheese.
Put it in perspective.
I'm not even sure I've counted correctly. I'm assuming all the people in that video still consider themselves "Christian Fascists." I'm also sure they're as consequential as Westboro Baptist.
It's not the end times. Peoples always gonna be crazy. It doesn't mean you have to be.
Someone told me I should watch the interview with Margaret Atwood that Joe Scarborough did, I did and while I like her, I'm unimpressed with her identification of the real danger which has nothing to do with sincerer religious belief. I was thinking of writing a piece about her championing of "liberal democracy" which I think is what got us here, egalitarian democracy being what we should really have as the goal.
