"AND WE LIKED IT!" 👴🏻

This'll be fun. Remind me: does Bill Maher have kids? I grew up in a town of 50,000; so, not big. But the drive-in I remember (I think there were two, but I can't remember where the other one was) was down the street from my girlfriend's (now the Lovely Wife) house. I do remember going to one with her in college, an even smaller town. It was basically in-town, too. So.... The Lovely Wife's mother grew up in rural East Texas. She told stories about having to get out and push the school bus. I still tell my daughter stories about riding my bike to school, and it was uphill both ways (it was, technically.  There was a sizeable "valley" on the way to school.  Sizeable for a kids on a bike, anyway.). No real snow, though. Any real snow and schools were closed. Well, it was Texas. It melted by the next day. Kids these days are spoiled, though. They don't know the joy of riding your bike to school. Not that I'd want my grandchild (no, don't have one, just a hypothetical) to do so. Too many weirdos and way too damned much traffic. When I was that young traffic was at 8 and 5 (men going to work), and damned light even then. I literally remember playing with sticks and old towels and blankets (no, I'm not going to tell you what I did). This was in the '60's. The school district where I grew up was still using a school building built in 1930. My sister-in-law taught there for a few years. In 2022 they finally closed it. I suppose Mrs. Susan C. Tolleson would be happy. She might also be happy the high school I attended had glass walls (i.e., it was a greenhouse) and no A/C. Freezing in what winter we had, miserable the rest of the year. I'm sure it built character. They finally replaced that one just a few years ago. Kids are so spoiled these days. Can your kid sew on ruffles, or play mumblety-peg with a pocket knife? Do they even have a pocket knife? Spoiled monsters. And now we're back pretty close to the year my grandfather was born. He did spoil me (I'm told; I don't remember) because I was named for him. I especially appreciate the comment that "Gush and gaudiness are entirely out of place at Christmas." That's tellin' 'em, durned whippersnappers!
