I wish I’d kept the recent tweet from a reporter enjoying Trump’s indictment, and recalling trying to call Trump what he so obviously was long before all journalists decided they could (sometime around February, 2021): a liar.

“No,” said her editors. “We don’t know his state of mind.”

But you do know the content of his statements. No one can know the internal dialogue of another. But we can assess what they say.

And MTG is a racist, anti-semitic xenophobe who wants to be in Manhattan on Monday for the attention. She’s stalked school shooting survivors and is openly homophonic and transphobic. But she doesn’t use the “N-word” (in public, at least) or publicly say “faggot!” (I guess “crisis actor!” would just be “confrontational”), so she’s fit for polite company. Or at least the TeeVee cameras of what was once the crown jewel of the news organization that was led by Murrow, Cronkite, Reasoner, Wallace, Safer and Bradley.

Still, we don’t know her state of mind, do we?

Maybe we are in decline after all…
