Would That It Were Always Simple

This is where I remind you that such “shame” has always been a feature of British politics (for the House of Commons, and other elected offices; never the Lords) , where it served the singular purpose of reminding the many-headed that they didn’t measure up.

It is used in America to the same effect: to keep the “wrong” people out of positions of any power. Which is why we have a long tradition of electing reprobates and convicts.
