The conviction of former Donald Trump advisor Peter Navarro will make Walt Nauta think twice about whether he's willing to do time for the former president, a former federal prosecutor. But the likeliest reason is because Stan Woodward is Nauta’s lawyer, and Stan Woodward is Navarro’s lawyer.
And Stan Woodward is an idiot.
Acyn has a video clip of Woodward outside the courtroom after the Navarro verdict, claiming the evidence clearly showed Trump extended executive privilege to Navarro. Which still didn’t allow Navarro to just not show up in response to the subpoena. But also, Navarro never put on evidence of executive privilege. The judge didn’t allow it, because Navarro didn’t have it.
So Woodward’s strategy is to appeal, because the judge wouldn’t allow submission of evidence he didn’t have. And even if Navarro had a signed, notarized document from Trump giving Navarro executive privilege protection for anything Navarro ever did ever…
…it still wouldn’t allow him to ignore a subpoena. He’d still have comply with the subpoena and justify his silence with the exercise of the privilege.
So Woodward’s got nothing on appeal.
Maybe when Navarro goes to jail, that lesson sinks in to Nauta. Maybe.
Or he at least makes the connection that they have the same lawyer. And lawyers don’t go to jail for giving bad legal advice. Not this kind of bad legal advice, anyway.
