People are never, according to the polls, “happy with the direction of the country.” Just as they are never happy with Congress, only with their representative.
And yet every four years, they vote for the incumbent. Which is why Trump got more votes in 2020 than in 2016, just in the wrong states. It’s still remarkable the incumbent was turned out after one term. Since FDR that has only happened to: Ford; Carter; and Bush pere. And Trump.
There is no incumbent now, which makes it odd that Trump paints Harris as the incumbent.
Try to reconcile these three quadrennial facts: always the “wrong direction” (because of Congress? POTUS? That question is never asked.); Congress sucks, but my guy is great!; and the incumbent has the advantage.
You can’t. But it makes a good horse race narrative. Every four years. ๐
