As a Catholic I find he is most believable as an extremely cynical atheist opportunist. He is a cynical materialist of the worst kind, the kind that a small number of psychotic-right-wing priests and bishops are eager to count as a conversion when they see it as a means to power as much as any cynical renaissance or early modern potentate did.
