Greenland is not being transferred to the United States, and its sovereignty remains intact. The new agreement explicitly recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark and the Greenlandic people’s right to self-determination. [emphasis added]

The agreement builds on the existing 1951 Defence Agreement, under which the United States already had broad military access to Greenland.
