What? Me Panic?

Actual sign seen on the freeway in Houston:

HURRICANE SEASON IS HERE

KEEP YOUR GAS TANK FULL

The irony of this, or rather, the stupidity, the "right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing?" That sign was on a road in north Houston, just south of Tomball. It's a "message board," one maintained by roadway authorities to give information about road conditions, closures, accidents, etc. And it's located about as far from the Gulf Coast as you can get and still be "in" Houston. Local authorities in Galveston (they don't call 'em "barrier islands" for nothing!) are trying to implement a plan to announce evacuations (when necessary) by zip codes; because the panic of Rita (caused by Katrina before it) two years ago led to people in the neighborhood of this sign fleeing north to Dallas, which so blocked up the roads the people from Galveston couldn't get off the island (Interstate 45 "starts" in Galveston and runs through Houston).

You'd think all the authorities in Houston would remember this:

Obviously, you'd be wrong.
