The controversy du jour

"God creates life, and that was my point. God does not want rape, and by no means was I suggesting that he does. Rape is a horrible thing, and for anyone to twist my words otherwise is absurd and sick," stated Richard Mourdock.

God doesn't want rape.  God just wants the babies that come from rape.  Because, you know, God moves in mysterious ways.

God also doesn't want the government to care for the babies who come from rape, or from any unwanted pregnancy.  God wants 'em to learn to tough it out on their own, so government programs don't become a hammock.  Because God loves life, 'n' stuff.

God protect me from the God-botherers

  1. Excellent, Rmj. God protect us all from the God-botherers.

The guv'mint will protect you in the womb and keep you alive by any means when you're at death's door, but to hell with you in between.

"I’ve struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize that life is that gift from God,” Mourdock said. “And even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen.”

There's a lot of fun to be had with this particular construction. To wit:

"I’ve struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize that justice is a gift from God. And even when justice begins in that horrible situation of serial killing, that it is something that God intended to happen.”

"I’ve struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize that patriotism is a gift from God,” Mourdock said. “And even when patriotism arises as a response to genocide, that it is something that God intended to happen.”

I’ve struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize that wealth is a gift from God,” Mourdock said. “And even when wealth comes from defrauding and exploiting others [which it often does - ed.] that it is something that God intended to happen.”

"I’ve struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize that redemption is a gift from God,” Mourdock said. “And even when redemption comes as a result of repenting one's molestation of children, that it is something that God intended to happen.”

That God - what a scamp he is in the eyes of Christianists!

The thing is, the slip of this guy's mask reveals the attitude that many fundamentalists/Dominionists/morally-retarded scolds actually hold, which is that God is a monster dangling our souls over the fires of eternity by a string and threatening to drop us into perdition lest we become as cruel as He in enforcing his Law. At the same time, for the particularly audacious this idea is used to exonerate their worst crimes and misdeeds as having been necessary to carrying out God's plan: after all, sometimes somebody needs to be raped into line.

There is nothing unique to Christianity or religion about this. It is a byproduct of an authoritarian mindset. Substitute "Hitler" for "God" and it works just a well.

"I've struggled with it myself for a long time..."

You've never faced the slightest theorectical possibility of being pregnant from rape. Save me your talk of struggle.
