Mini-me

And yesterday the Governor of Texas, who has no authority over when schools open, close, or do anything at all, announced that schools would be open in the fall in Texas.

Which the Commissionor of the Texas Education Agency, who also has no authority to force schools to open during a public health crisis, agreed with.

No consultation or contact with school districts in Texas, large or small, occurred before that announcement.  The school districts, all grappling with whether or not to re-open, and how, and trying to assess and allay the concerns of worried parents across their districts, had no warning this was coming, or what the announcement would be.

Abbott is turning into mini-Trump:  a terrible administrator with no interest in taking responsibility for his actions, and equally no interest in working with others.  The primary purpose of government is to protect the people in public health emergencies.  Instead our hospitals are filling up, the number of covid-19 cases is skyrocketing, and the governor blames the people for exposing themselves.  And then he orders us all to be exposed some more.

He has delayed this decision for weeks, giving no hints what he would do or when he would decide, and then everybody found out at once.  Lots of parents are left angry that their children will have to attend classes, lots of parents demanding to know what their district is going to do in August; and most districts are still working on that problem.

Thanks for the sour persimmons, Governor.
