I think it's one of the results of people moving around a lot that people seem less important to them than if they live in the same community with the same people for decades. Though that's no guarantee. One of the members of my family died, someone who had been involved with their church and the community pretty intensively but their death didn't seem to make that much of an impression on anyone outside of the family.
