Texas joined the Union in 1845, as a slave holding state. It had fought to separate from Mexico because Mexican law prohibited slaves. And Anglos in Texas wanted a piece of the economy that made cotton “King.”
Oh, and one of the first things Columbus did when he landed was make slaves of the natives. Slavery by and large “settled” America for Europeans, and made it wealthy since there were no cities of gold to plunder.
Slavery didn’t die here. It was reborn, and established on a new and pernicious idea: race. Americans are still dealing with that hidden, but entirely self-inflicted, wound.
We finally ended slavery. We’re still working on racism. Not very well, but some are trying harder than others.
