My earliest political memory is the day after the 1964 election. All I knew was that LBJ was from Texas, so in all my 9 year old innocence I asked my father who won, the very first thing that morning. The old man was a good man, but that was the day I found out he was no Democrat. He answered: “The goddamned Democrats won everything!” 😡

I remember thinking: “I thought we were the goddamned Democrats.” And I have been, ever since.
