Mostly we hide it from ourselves.  When I was a kid, it was: “I just don’t want my daughter to marry one.” And when my town had to integrate the schools, they did the only logical thing. They closed all the black schools, and bussed all the black students.

Well, they weren’t gonna bus white kids to a black school! The city had three high schools. Suddenly it had two. 50 years later the city has more doubled in size. It still has just two high schools.
