The story goes that LBJ told an aide to start circulating a scurrilous rumor about a political opponent.
"But sir," the aide replied, "That story's not true!"
"I know it isn't," LBJ said. "I wanna see him deny it!"
I have no intention of reading Robert Caro to find out if this ever happened. I'm just reminded of it, now and again. JMM is right: some stories are neutron bombs. Denying it is not the best defense in these days after the apogee of "MeToo". Not denying it, on the other hand....
