I once proudly owned a campaign button with a yellow dog emblazoned on it, surrounded by the caption "I am a yellow-dog Democrat." The idea was you were such a loyal Democrat you'd vote for a yellow dog if it ran on the Democratic ticket.P.S. To be clear, I'll vote for my mailman if he ends up running against Trump.— Asha Rangappa (@AshaRangappa_) February 13, 2020
A holdover, in the South, of the days when the Republicans (thanks to Lincoln and then Johnson) were identified with Reconstruction, and Democrats were identified with the Old South. That political culture hasn't changed; the parties have just switched places.
But yellow dog Democrats seems to be making a comeback.
Yeah, it looked like that.
