O Rose, Thou Art Sick

The story is about Timothy Pickering, who tried to get several states to secede from the Union in 1803, in response to Jefferson’s election and the subsequent Louisiana Purchase. (Without which we wouldn’t have Cajun food, New Orleans, jazz, or beignets, so what the hell, dude?) Arguably Pickering showed the way for the secessionists a generation later. And the lesson is: "Democracy is fragile.” Well, I guess. On the other hand, we’re still here. So maybe that fragility is not a fatal weakness. OTOH, as Chou En Lai was reported to have said when asked about it, “It’s too soon to tell.”
