The story is about Timothy Pickering, who tried to get several states to secede from the Union in 1803, in response to Jefferson’s election and the subsequent Louisiana Purchase. (Without which we wouldn’t have Cajun food, New Orleans, jazz, or beignets, so what the hell, dude?) Arguably Pickering showed the way for the secessionists a generation later. And the lesson is:
