But besides that, why is it so divisive?
3/The fact that the word was derived from vernacular slang used by African Americans codes the out-group meaning further when white people use it scornfully.

It is intended to literally cast derision on an out-group and perceived social adversary.
Tl;dr: language is words, words can be clubs (this can be established without appeals to authority). Words are also lingo, used to distinguish those within the group from those without. (We all do it!) Or terminology, used to facilitate communication. Except “all professions are a conspiracy against the laity.” Which, like most of Shaw’s observations, sheds more heat than light.5/how the coded use of language is driving division. For more on Lifton and loading the language, start here. We do not have to let people use linguistic wedges to drive their agenda. Call them out. Explain how and why they are doing what they’re doing.https://t.co/aTMr0fbqVF
