Puppet Show

You may recall Chris Kise threatened a motion for mistrial. This was on the second day of Eric’s testimony. The grounds were to be political donations allegedly made by Engoron’s clerk, which he said in court was based on a story from Breitbart.

Ring any bells?

Well, the mistrial motion never happened, but Elise Stefanik, not a lawyer or even a law school graduate, published an ethics complaint she filed against Engoron, replete with case citations and legal footnotes. Now how did she come to write that?

Lisa Rubin argues, persuasively, that Trump’s lawyers wrote it and got her to file it as a complaint, rather than as a motion for mistrial which would fail utterly. (Kise was roundly mocked for using Breitbart as a source.) And some think this is clever because it is raw meat for MAGA.

Really?

MAGA is going to believe what it wants to believe, with it without the desperate attempts of Donald Trump. What they aren’t going to do is storm the courthouses of America and overturn verdicts and prevent trials from concluding, a la January 6th. Ever.

I think Rubin’s analysis is perfectly sound. I also think it shows Trump is absolutely at sea, despite his control of the GOP. He’s a puppet master, but nobody wants to see the puppet show.
