There’s No One Coming To Save Us

If it passes the House, the GOP Senators will whiff it. Only 1/3rd of them are on the ballot next November, and most of them are so incumbent they think they were born there. Cornyn, for example (the one I know best), isn’t worried about re-election. He’s only worried about Paxton in the primaries.

It’s only schadenfreude to see this as bad for the GOP. A lot of Americans are going to be hurt by this; the many who haven’t been directly hurt by government actions since Trump took office. You can say the system is working (and I do, if only to counter the doomsayers screaming “We’re done for, we’re done for!” with every sunrise), but damn, we, the people really screwed ourselves this time. All because of an avian flu nobody was prepared for?

We gotta have a public conversation about the concept of “civic duty.” I get that we have a sort of “civic religion” built up around the “Founding Fathers” and the Constitution, and all. But: “Religion is responsibility, or it is nothing at all.”

We’ve really got to face that head-on.

  1. Most Americans do not know what "virtue" means in a republican context.

    1. Neither do the Republicans. Ironically.

  2. I'll bite: how should we define 'civic duty' and/or 'virtue in a republican context'?
