The article is a cogent analysis of America since WWII, and how we have come to grief and been left behind by the world we saved and put back together in the 1940's. The postwar world economic booms papered over the failures of the "warfare state," but those cracks have been showing since the '70's. The pandemic just finally made them impossible to ignore.
Then again, America is just as likely to say to China and the rest of the world: "Hold my beer." It's still the American Dream that every little boy can be a yacht-owner; all reality to the contrary.
(And what that Salon article doesn't say, this does.)
