Tick tick tick....

I really didn't think it would be this easy to assemble the images.

So here's Lara Logan on "60 Minutes" on Benghazi:

And here's Lara Logan again, on "60 Minutes" on Benghazi:

And, just for grins, here's Lara Logan apologizing for the story the first time, on CBS's morning show:

I think we can safely say we know when the apology that aired on "60 Minutes" was taped; just as we can safely say the apology "60 Minutes" issued through Ms. Logan was much more detailed on the morning show than it was on Sunday night.  Maybe since she'd said it all once that day she was bored with repeating herself.

The first picture is from the original broadcast.  The second picture is from the sorry/not sorry apology.  I don't like paying attention to how people are dressed, especially because sexist and classist and other things, but does anybody think it's an accident Ms. Logan was showing cleavage on the first show (Hey!  A "sexy" news story is SEXY!) and wearing basically a T-shirt collar for her apology appearances?

Yes, her apology was a joke and her motives in the original story are questionable (Wonkette has all the details; and the link to CBS and Fox News via David Rhodes makes this story at TPM seem all the more likely, especially when you add in CBS owned Threshold Editions), and even yes, the second dress is more appropriate for a morning TV show when you aren't a Hollywood celebrity and no, I don't care how Lara Logan dresses for TV appearances, and yes, this is small beer compared to Ms. Logan's "I Want to Believe" approach to Dylan Davies, but...

Does anybody else feel played by all of this, on several levels?

It just seems a little too purposeful for me.  And it makes the whole thing, if that's possible, even sleazier.

  1. CBS and 60 Minutes deserve to go down for this kind of thing. They deserved to go down for putting Rush Limbaugh on their flagship "news" program with Katie Couric. This is far worse than what forced Dan Rather out and CBS has its fingers all through it, this is lying on a "news" program to promote a book published by them which they had every reason to know was based on self-serving lies told by a person who was obviously lying.

I think the failure of Threshold Editions to fact check the book is the first of a string of failures that leaves any rational person with the conclusion that all involved were spreading a huge lie for ideological-corporate motives. And as long as that kind of thing can be done, not only on cabloid TV but on broadcast, with no consequences, our democracy is in danger from the corporate media that controls an effective majority of the public discourse.

  2. Agreed. I think it's clear the producers of "60 Minutes" put Lara Logan front and center on their show to counter the "old guys" image left by Mike Wallace, Morley Safer, Andy Rooney, et al.

And they wanted some of that sweet, sweet FoxNews demographic. Now, in many, many ways, it has blown up in their face.
