Uh....
“Just because it makes you feel uncomfortable doesn’t mean it has to change,” [Megyn Kelly, "brilliant supermodel"] said (unintentionally providing a sort of mantra for conservatism vis-à-vis race). “You know, I mean, Jesus was a white man, too. He was a historical figure; that’s a verifiable fact—as is Santa, I want you kids watching to know that—but my point is: How do you revise it, in the middle of the legacy of the story, and change Santa from white to black?”
So:
Historically accurate
SO NOT Historically accurate!
Historically accurate (and true!)
NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Glad we could clear this up.
"[Jesus] was a historical figure; that’s a verifiable fact"
ReplyDeleteIt is a verifiable fact that Jesus was a historical figure? People who are upset that Obama won't provide his "long form birth certificate" accept as a matter of verifiable, historical fact that someone for whom neither a birth or death day was recorded nor who was mentioned by contemporary chroniclers existed. I don’t mean to blaspheme another person’s religion here: isn’t part of the point of Christianity that God’s only begotten son was such a “nobody” that history is silent on his very existence? Wouldn’t some argue that part of the point of Christianity is also that you need to accept not only Jesus’ divinity and resurrection as a matter of faith but indeed accept Jesus’ very existence as a matter of faith?
The historical figure of Jesus of Nazareth is really not in great dispute among Biblical scholars, not all of whom would qualify as "believers" by either objective terms or Megyn Kelly's.
ReplyDeleteThe argument you are addressing is the right one: less that he was than who he was.
