I knew I was out of luck
The day the music died.
February 3, 1959.
By rights, I should spend the day drinking whiskey and rye.
No, that's in June. It's a line from the song, one I still remember (almost entirely) some 40 years later.
Back in the day when AM still ruled in Tyler, Texas, "American Pie" forced even the stations devoted to 2:39 (the length of the average pop song allowed) to play the full version, which ran to nearly 10 minutes (if memory serves).
So a double serving of nostalgia, mitigated by the fact I was only 3 1/2 on the date in question. :-)
And I didn't mean to be obscure, or assume everyone is my age: the song is "American Pie," the day the music died (per the song) is the day of the plane crash that killed Buddy Holly, Richie Valens, and the Big Bopper (who was from Beaumont! Who knew?).
That day was February 3, 1959.
The picture is from the album cover the single was on.
You could do worse things. Is it your birthday?

Those early plane crashes are what made me swear I'd never get on one and I never have. Wonder why the car crashes never kept me out of cars.
ReplyDeleteI know the song well. Chevy by the levee and all.
ReplyDeleteI hate assuming people know what I know.
ReplyDeleteAnd I hate assuming they don't know it, either.
