I could have sworn we were over this....

President Donald Trump returned to the Houston area on Saturday to meet with survivors of Hurricane Harvey and participate in relief efforts—which he did not do during his first visit to the disaster-stricken region earlier this week.
Daily Beast:
On his second visit to Houston this week, President Trump on Saturday visited an emergency relief center to meet some of the victims of Hurricane Harvey. The president, who was accompanied by first lady Melania Trump, was seen handing out hot dogs and posing for photos with Houston residents forced out of their homes by catastrophic flooding. He said he was seeing “a love of love” and “a lot of happiness” as the city recovers from the storm. “The message is that things are working out well. Really, I think people appreciate what’s been done. It’s been done very efficiently, very well, and that’s what we want. We’re very happy with the way everything is going. A lot of love. There’s a lot of love,” Trump said. He also visited with children affected by the storm, who he said are “doing great.” Trump faced harsh criticism for his first visit to the flood-ravaged city, with critics saying his decision to boast about high turnout rather than commenting on the storm’s victims was tone deaf.
Maybe this is Trump's second visit to Houston in his entire life; but it is not his second visit to Houston since Hurricane Harvey came ashore, because he didn't get anywhere CLOSE to Houston the first time he came to Texas. He went to Corpus Christi, which is 200 miles away from Houston (even in Texas that's not "close," and while Houston sprawls, Corpus is not in "the Houston area"; well, maybe from New York), and then to Austin, which is 160+ miles from Houston (close, but no cigar). Corpus got some of the hurricane as it came ashore, but Rockport got scrubbed from the map (Trump didn't go there) and Houston was still being rained on at the time, so he didn't come here. Sorry, Daily Beast, you're the big loser: you got it wrong twice in one paragraph.
The whole complaint about the first trip was that he didn't come to Houston and he didn't visit anyone affected by the storm. But, honestly, second largest state in the union, second most populous: is it too much to ask for a little geographical accuracy, huh?
Yep, based in New York. If Trump had visited New York City, they'd have had his location right down to the street address and if it had been a question of two streets away from where he should have been, it would have been noted and a big deal made of it.
ReplyDeleteThere really are no people in the United States quite as provincial as the residents of the NYC area.
