The partition of India and Pakistan after the Brits withdrew was largely a matter of ethnic issues, and the trouble with Kashmir was political (and ethnic) far more than it was "religious." (The conflicts between Hindus and Muslims in Kashmir, and which nation it should be associated with, is far more a matter of culture than religious beliefs).
But, yeah, it's complicated. Far too complicated for the POTUS to ever have to think about n'est-ce pas?
I think you'd probably need to know what movie or TV show he watched. Though he could have gotten it direct from Putin.
