Eh...no.

The theory is, basically, McConnell and Graham, a la the triumvirate who went to Nixon, will convince Trump he's in peril in the Senate, and offer an alternative: Trump will not stand for re-election, thus taking the wind out of the sails of impeachment, and leaving Trump in his "bully pulpit."

Yeah, maybe; to the last part.  To the first part, why would Trump do that and put his head in the noose?  His lawyers are arguing strenuously in federal court (and plan to do so before the Supremes, if allowed) that as President, Trump is invisible and bulletproof and can't even be investigated!  (I'm waiting for the House Freedom Caucus to take up that argument and storm the SCIF again.)  Trump doesn't understand the law, but he does understand even the OLC opinion doesn't protect him once he no longer has the Presidential Seal.  He'd be better off resigning and getting President Pence to pardon him.

It's the only reason he's running for re-election at this point.  He probably doesn't trust Pence to be the patsy Gerald Ford was.
