super cool to realize that the capacity for shame was a load-bearing part of our system of government and that the MAGA movement's total rejection of that is an insanely powerful cheat codeSlavery was shameful. The Trail of Tears was shameful. The Tulsa Massacre. The wholesale slaughter of the native peoples of this country. The Tuskegee Experiment. The perfectly legal and violent opposition to labor unions. “Poor laws.” Sharecropping. The Japanese internment camps. The again perfectly legal discrimination against Mexicans and Central and South Americans across the West and Southwest. Eugenics laws: “Three generations of imbeciles is enough!” We lauded the man who wrote those words as a great public figure and one of our greatest jurists. And then the Nazis shamed that out of us. We thought we’d shamed racism out of our legal system. John Roberts proves we haven’t.
All shame has ever really done is make us hide our history from ourselves. What has MAGA changed? Where did MAGA come from? Foreign invaders? Foreign and alien ideas, antithetical to American culture and history? A bacteria, a virus, from an enemy laboratory far across the seas?
Yeah, right…
