I missed this yesterday, but NPR is reporting that EPA wants a new rule allowing the Administrator of EPA to suspend environmental regulations in the wake of any "act of God."
Of course, New Orleans was destroyed in part because of lack of environmental regulation that allowed excessive pumping of groundwater, building on what should have been wetlands, and the destruction of coastal wetlands due to flood control efforts on the Mississippi. The only question is: how often will this "hair of the dog" cure be tried, before it is firmly rejected?
I give it until November, 2006.
