Not to be unkind, (yes, you'll have to listen to or read the interview first)this is something or unduly harsh, but the Desert Fathers understood this: who you are actually comes from where you are. It is external, not internal.
Making it internal is the hard work of spiritual discipline. Making it internal will save your life. But it is "a condition of complete simplicity, costing not less than everything." Which is why so few of us pursue it, and why so many of us are so dependent on the good will of others for the safety and comfort, and even sanity, of ourselves.
