May you live in....

And it'll be ready to go into effect on November 1, 2019?

Because otherwise, who the fuck cares?  If Britain crashes out of the EU with no trade arrangements with anybody, they're screwed so hard democracy itself might not be able to pick up the pieces.

All in the name of saving democracy.  On the other hand, in order to save democracy we have to suspend democracy?

I heard a British MP argue, with a straight face, that Johnson's strategy is that a threatened crash-out will prompt the EU to "finally" negotiate with Britain.  Which is quite a surprise to the EU, I'm sure, who think that's what they've been doing.  His argument reminded me of the scene in "Blazing Saddles" where the newly-arrived black sheriff, aware he's ridden into a town of racists to declare himself their new sheriff, puts a gun to his head and threatens to use it if anybody tries to stop him.  The crowd wails in fear and horror, wondering "Won't anybody save him?," as the sheriff drags himself into his office, the gun firmly against his temple.

That was the argument the MP was making:  Britain will shoot itself if anybody tries to interfere.  And they expect the EU to suddenly treat it as a hostage crisis; even though it's the UK holding itself hostage and threatening to shoot....itself.

No wonder Brexit is such a cock-up.

Interesting times, indeed.
