This is perhaps the most important speech an Australian diplomat has given since WW2. Amb Hockey has slammed the Trump Administration ; "If you abdicate leadership, you rarely get it back" - Amb Joe Hockey— Pete EVANS (@911CORLEBRA777) October 25, 2019

"The United States is the most innovative nation on earth but, like every market leader, it will be beaten if it thinks it can do it all on its own," Hockey said in the speech to Westminster College.Outward aggression that is as substantial as a scarecrow:
"If you abdicate leadership you rarely get it back.
"So the US must not allow itself to walk away from its trade leadership role otherwise it will inevitably pay a very significant economic price."
Referring to the US President's election slogan, he added: "Being open to the world made America great in the first place; it will keep you great."
Hockey said he found US debate on trade "baffling" and that free trade had made the world safer by bringing nations closer together.
Critics of free trade base their arguments on "sentimentality and fear, rather than hope and opportunity", he added.
"History proves that economic isolationism is a precursor for war," he said.
"If a nation becomes economically isolated then history proves it can end up accelerating domestic
nationalism fuelling outward facing aggression."
Turkey fully understands not to fire on the Kurds as they leave what will be known as the Safe Zone for other fairly nearby areas. I don’t have to repeat that large scale Sanctions will be imposed for violations. Going well! ISIS secured by Kurds with Turkey ready as backup.....— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 25, 2019
That "safe zone" is being enforced with the aid of Russia, not the U.S. Sanctions are not a light switch; Trump cancelled them after 9 days. They hadn't had a chance to be set into a memorandum, much less go into effect and have any affect on Turkey.
....USA has gained Trillions of Dollars in wealth since November 2016. All others way down. Our power is Economic before having to use our newly rebuilt Military, a much better alternative. Oil is secured. Our soldiers have left and are leaving Syria for other places, then....— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 25, 2019
The closest oil came to being "insecure" in recent memory was the attack on a facility in Saudi Arabia. Did you notice that at the fuel pump? Did the world even notice? Remember the burning oil fields of Kuwait that Saddam left behind? That had more effect oil availability than anything going on in Syria today.
....COMING HOME! We were supposed to be there for 30 days - That was 10 years ago. When these pundit fools who have called the Middle East wrong for 20 years ask what we are getting out of the deal, I simply say, THE OIL, AND WE ARE BRINGING OUR SOLDIERS BACK HOME, ISIS SECURED!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) October 25, 2019
Most of this is simply lies and empty statements from a man who thinks Presidential power is measured by the size of his Twitter audience. "ISIS SECURED!"? Yeah, not quite:
.@EsperDoD speaking at the NATO Defense Ministerial confirms the US military will reinforce its positions in Deir Ezzoir near the Syrian oil fields to deny them to ISIS, says the reinforcements “will include some mechanized forces”— Ryan Browne (@rabrowne75) October 25, 2019
The Australian Ambassador is talking about economic leadership. There are other kinds of leadership we can't walk away from, either.
