It's not like Trump & Co. are body-snatchers who stealthily replaced the GOP. Charlie Pierce called it the prion disease that infected the GOP under Reagan. Personally I favor the origins in Goldwater's loss to LBJ.This is such revisionist history.— Judd Legum (@JuddLegum) October 29, 2019
Republicans ran an entire presidential campaign attacking the military record of Kerry, who was awarded two purple hearts, a silver star, and a bronze star https://t.co/HBdy7AB3T2
Either way, Trump is not the infection. He's just the logical end of a road they started down a long time ago. The scary part is: it's likely they jettison Trump, in impeachment or next November, and go on as they have, but worse. Nixon was a Bernie Bro compared to Reagan, and that was only a 6 year gap.
You can't be surprised by Donald Trump if you spent thirty seconds considering Sarah Palin. Trump is the symptom, not the disease. The core failure is acting in good faith and having any fidelity to your role as an elected or appointed official. The cynic in me says it's worse before it gets better, Trump has shown the path, someone more competent will exploit it more fully.
