Whither FEMA?

Trump is going to leave disaster relief to the states. Unless it’s the second most populous red state:
The Trump Administration is working with State and Local Officials on the ground in Texas in response to the tragic flooding that took place yesterday. Our Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, will be there shortly. Melania and I are praying for all of the families impacted by this horrible tragedy. Our Brave First Responders are on site doing what they do best. GOD BLESS THE FAMILIES, AND GOD BLESS TEXAS!
It’s a bold strategy. Let’s see how it works out.

  1. Annual orientation for the Honors Program at UH fifty some years ago was at a Boy Scout camp near Wimberley on the Blanco for the better part of a week in the late August light. Blanco flows into the San Marcos which joins up to the Guadalupe. Bunkhouse and food service were at the top of a steep slope a few hundred feet above the river. Flotation devices consisted mostly of truck tire inner tubes. Surprisingly few medieval castles, considering all the German heritage there. My younger sister's English teacher, both her junior and senior years in high school, was a third or fourth generation German-Texan immigrant from Fredericksburg with a doctorate in German who later became a board member and past president of the German-Texan Heritage Society. Sent him a link to three poems I translated fifteen or so years ago, written by a 'Forty-Eighter' who commanded the 27th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment in which my great great grandfather served in the last six months of the Late Unpleasantness. The poems were about a tent or 'Heimchen' on.a beach on Brazos Santiago, a week in Algiers across the Mississippi from New Orleans in February 1865 and more than a year on a hilltop overlooking Little Rock in 1864. Never received a reply from my sister's German-Texan English teacher, but did get a perfunctory acknowledgement e-mail rather dismissive of 'An Mein Vaterland,' virtually the only poem in translation for which Colonel Konrad Krez is known in the English speaking world. The message was from a native speaker of German. A Krez biography was written in 1935 by Ludwig Finckh as a companion to a new edition of his collected poems in German and published in Germany. Finckh was widely read in Germany, a party member, and closely acquainted with both Hermann Hesse and Thomas Mann. Elon Musk began buying up Boca Chica and much of the island of Brazos Santiago for his Starship City in 2012. My deepest condolences to the friends and family of all those injured, lost or perished in the on-going Texas Hill Country flash-flooding disaster. As Wordsworth still says, after revising his Prelude for fifty years, "attention springs and comprehensiveness and memory flow." High hopes for an effective government response and speedy recovery from damages. Keep an eye out for the scorpions.

  2. What Craig said. My first church (as a student) was in southern Illinois, where I was told about the 19th century German immigrants who came here to escape the wars of Germany. They were pissed, the story went, to find they needed to fight for the Union and defeat slavery. That anger drove them to fight. It was a very different perspective for this Southern boy. Travel is broadening.
