If I have any credibility with you from 20 years of reporting on rightwing & fascist movements, please listen when I beg you not to celebrate Charlie Kirk getting shot. Leave aside morality: this isn’t a match in dry grass, it’s a torch. We do not want what this could ignite & we would not win.

Twenty years? That’s back to, what? 2005? I remember King’s assassination. Hell, I remember Oswald being gunned down by Ruby in real time on live TV. But I really remember the outpouring of grief and anger and violence after Dr. King’s death. Does anyone really think Charlie Kirk was the white man’s Dr. King? That even Kirk’s handful of followers are going to explode in anger over their four centuries of grievances for being…white men in America? Trump was (is) alive to organize and lead the white nationalist violence on J6. Who organizes Kirk’s online crew? Where do they aim their pent up anger? At the nearest Starbucks? At women who just aren’t submissive enough? At the students of Utah Valley University? Is someone going to meet them there, to tell them what building to storm?

What national movement did Charlie Kirk lead? What marches did he organize and lead? How many times was he jailed for demanding justice for white men who want the’50’s and ‘60’s of their imaginations (Kirk was 31) back? I’m old enough to remember all the white guys talking about violent opposition to public health orders during Covid, and how few of them could organize enough people for a two-car funeral procession.

If Sharlet has any credibility, it’s a damned shame.

Give me a fucking break.

Before knowing all the facts, voices on the right are now exploiting the tragic death of Charlie Kirk & calling for all-out war on the left. This is sad, but not surprising, at a time when we should all be denouncing political violence. They were not so upset when Minn. Democrats were assassinated.

And like Donald Trump, they’ll be very happy to let someone else do the fighting for them. Or just cluck approvingly online, where it’s safe.
